Taking a swing at poverty raises R57 600 for Orphan Fund

A full field of 80 golfers turned up at Simbithi Country Club on Saturday for the fourball alliance event, enjoying perfect weather and good quality golf - for the most part at least!

A charity golf day in aid of The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund proved again that its much easier to get by with a little help from one’s friends.

The Skewis brothers, Jason, Dylan and Scott, host an annual golf day, the proceeds of which go to a charity close to their hearts.

This year, the sixth edition of the Skewis Golf Day, the Orphan Fund was the grateful recipient of R 57 600 raised on the day.

Top team on the day, with a huge total of 102 points, were Nic Snyman, Tyrone Pullen and Michael Bartholomew. (Absent: Julian Pace).

“We are very happy to support the Orphan Fund. The work they do is impressive and necessary, particularly with everything that has been going on over the past 2 years,” said Dylan.

Players who did not fare well were no doubt grateful for the mulligans they could purchase as an additional fundraiser.

The second best finishing team, with 99 points, were Rob Ferguson, Jon Berning, Dane Tremearne and Jimmy Hesse.

The team of Nic Snyman, Tyrone Pullen, Michael Bartholomew and Julian Pace carded 102 points for the overall win.

There were prizes for the top 7 teams, as well as for the best dressed, longest drive, closest to the pin and a putting competition – which meant almost everyone took home something for their efforts.

Bettie Gagnepain, Warren Storror, Charmaine Welthagen and Carol Postma all made the trip from Richard’s Bay in support of the Skewis golf day.

Rounding off the day’s festivities, some amazing donated items – including a Siya Kolisi Sharks jersey signed by the Springboks and Tendai “The Beast” Mtawarira’s game worn pants and socks in a donated Printwild frame – were auctioned off.

Lance Robert and Haden Keeton enjoy the 19th hole at Simbithi Country Club after a day of golf.

The auction alone raised R28 900.

For the Orphan Fund, supporting 13 charities on the North Coast as well as numerous other causes, the donation will have a significant impact.

Stephen Ivey and Derek Brunskill – who also won best dressed prize on the day – were both happy to dust off their clubs for a good cause.

“We are so grateful to Jason, Dylan and Scott for choosing us this year. Every cent helps us to help others and we will make sure that these funds get put to good use,” said Orphan Fund co-ordinator, Mpume Vilakazi.
