Umhlali Prep’s young Carter guns for golf glory

The Grade R pupil at Umhlali Prep has been trying his hand at golf since the tender age of 18 months, developing an instant love for the sport.

Five-year-old Carter Ross is a future golf star in the making, hoping to swing his way to an international trip this weekend.

The Grade R pupil at Umhlali Prep has been trying his hand at golf since the tender age of 18 months, developing an instant love for the sport.

“He began swinging with some plastic clubs and we noticed pretty quickly he has amazing hand-eye coordination,” said Carter’s mother, Tarryn.

“At 4 years, he had already progressed to playing on a full course with his dad and has been competing in tournaments over the past few months.

“He plays in a series called the SA Kids Golf Championships in the 5-6 age group. They play monthly at courses around Durban,” Tarryn said.

Left-handed Carter tees off on the third hole at Simbithi, having graduated to full-sized courses less than a year ago.

Since playing in his first competition in October, Carter has finished second twice and first once, earning a spot in the World Championships qualifier in Johannesburg at Huddle Park GC this weekend.

“It is the first time we are travelling for his golf, so it’s all very exciting. If he places among the top 3, he will qualify for almost all of the kids tournaments around the world. This means potential access to the European junior championships, as well as tournaments in Malaysia and America.”
