North Coast swimmers raise more than R30 000 at Midmar

Although the purpose of the 8 mile was primarily to raise funds, it should also be noted that the Crawford team finished in the fourth fastest time.

North Coast swimmers have again proven their class, posting excellent results in a number of categories at the Midmar Mile over the weekend.

Dominique Donner-Rodd (51) and Jenny Ireland (71) both placed first in their categories, while the Crawford International North Coast team participating in the 8 mile charity challenge finished fourth.

Donner-Rodd delivered a fantastic performance, finishing first in the 51-60 female category in a blistering time of 24 minutes and 42 seconds. That time was also good for the first overall female position in the 31+ category.

Rachael Rodd (back) celebrates with Aria Pitham, José Cardoso and Kai Marks after the Crawford team finished their 8 mile swim for charity.

Ireland is also to be commended for a sterling performance, winning the 71-80 female category in a time of 32 minutes and 31 seconds.

The 8 and 16 mile charity swims have long been part of the Midmar Mile’s 49-year history, but for the first time the 8 mile was open to school teams.

Last Thursday and Friday the Crawford team of Kai Marks (11), José Cardoso (11), Rachael Rodd (9) and Aria Pitham (12) swam a combined 8 miles in a relay format, with each swimmer completing a mile on both days.

Coach Donner-Rodd completed the entire 8 miles, swimming alongside each team member during their respective legs.

“It was an amazing experience for the young team and they all swam incredibly well. Knowing they had a purpose – raising funds for the Chad le Clos Foundation – spurred them on to complete the challenge,” said Donner-Rodd.

The team has already raised more than R30 000 for the foundation, with donations still accepted until the end of March.

“We have had such good support from the North Coast community, with particular thanks to IPSS Medical Rescue and TEN Civils for their donations,” she said.
