Double delight for North Coast swimming twins
The twins have qualified for the SA junior nationals and will also compete in the SA Biathlon Championships.
Twins Charlie and Ellen Calf (11) are already a force on the South African swimming circuit, both putting in dominant performances at the recent KZN Junior Swimming Championships.
Ellen won 6 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals, also bagging the Victrix Ludorum honours as the top performing U11 girl.
Charlie won 3 golds and 1 bronze medal, also bettering 2 KZN junior records in the 50m and 100m breaststroke events, which placed him second overall in the U11 boys division.
Not content with their medal haul, the dynamic duo also won the 200m team medley relay with Nicholas Taylor and Saskya Kistnasami, convincingly bettering another provincial record.
The two Ashton International College pupils both swim as members of the Seals Swimming Club, coached by former African triathlon champion, Dominique Donner-Rodd.
“The twins are highly talented. They are particularly dominant in breaststroke,” said Donner-Rodd.
Showing they are good on land as well, the twins both finished among the medals at the KZN Biathlon Championships (swimming and running) at the weekend.
Ellen won gold in the girls U13 age group, with Charlie claiming silver in the boys U13 event.
The twins have qualified for the SA junior nationals and they will also compete in the SA Biathlon Championships – both events taking place in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) in April.
Aside from the twins, there is a third Calf sibling, younger sister Molly (10) showing much promise.
“Molly is also an excellent level 3 swimmer and just like her siblings, particularly excels in breaststroke,” Donner-Rodd said.
