JumpStart Challenge sees hearty support for good cause at Ballito

With events that ranged in distance from 3.3km to 95km, athletes and amateurs alike enjoyed the different challenge levels at Holla Trails.

From energetic tots to relaxed grandparents, the JumpStart Challenge had something for everyone on Sunday morning.

The physical event of the JumpStart Challenge – which continues virtually until March 20 – was well supported by locals who linked up for a good cause.

With events that ranged in distance from 3.3km to 95km, athletes and amateurs alike enjoyed the different challenge levels at Holla Trails.

Some notable entrants included South African para-surfer and double amputee, David Williams, and former Springbok Jeremy Thomson.

Candice Bouwker and Chanty Gallagher finished the 3.3km walk/run in perfect weather on Sunday morning.

“The trail was absolutely beautiful and the conditions were perfect. It was boiling hot though, so I was lucky the people I had with me made it feel like it was only 500m.

If someone like me can do it and put in the effort – and still be standing – then so can able-bodied people in aid of young South Africans,” said Williams after completing the 3.3km walk.

Echoing the sentiment, Thomson said he was happy to see events return “in-person”.

“It is incredible to be here and you can feel the positive energy. There is that feeling of hope, that everyone will get back under our blue skies on weekends,” he said.

Nathan Fraser hops across the finish line, which briefly fell down during Sunday’s race.

The challenge is held annually by the Mr Price Foundation, this year with support of the Spar Group, Absa Bank, Mr Price Sport, as well as City Logistics, Fineline Technologies, CMH Ballito and Garmin.

Funds raised go towards elevating impoverished youth across our country.

Although the in-person challenge is done, there is still time to do your bit with virtual entries open until March 20.

You can do a run/walk of 3, 7 or 15km or a cycle of 15, 50 or 100km with all entries costing R99 per person.

Ayanda Nteta was happy to participate in the cycling event, her first outing on single track trails.
