City powers to victory in Nodunga soccer tournament

Power City beat Phelem FC 5-4.

Mzansi flair kept spectators on their feet throughout the first annual Nodunga soccer tournament in Cranbrook held on Sunday.

The tournament was sponsored by a farmer and owner of Te Amoh Agri Supplies, Senzo Nene.

His company supplies farms with agricultural chemicals.

Six teams took part, and Power City walked away champions after beating Phelem FC 5-4 on penalties after the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

They won a trophy, a sheep and gold medals and all teams got a new soccer kit.

Bongani Donyane, an 18-year-old Phelem FC defender, was named Man of the Match.

Although his team lost, Donyane was in top foam as a solid wall between the strikers and the goalkeeper.

“I am happy about the award but disappointed about not winning the trophy. We looked forward to this day but did not take our chances,” said Donyane.

Power City captain Maswakhe Mathumbu(17) was over the moon after winning his first silverware.

Nene said it was his dream to do such an event because he grew up playing soccer and he always wanted to support young soccer players.

“I was also regularly stopped by soccer team asking for sponsorship. So it made me very happy to see the community coming out in numbers to support the tournament.

“Thank you to all the residents who helped me organise the event and Mr Mhlaba, from a neighbouring farm, who supported the tournament with a sheep, which was part of the price won by Power City,” said Nene.

Champions Power City celebrate their win.
