Ballito MMA fighter Cameron Coulson chases African title

The 20-year-old started training at the KO Fighting Fitness Gym in Ballito when he was just 17, and in a short space of time earned himself provincial colours and a good reputation.

Ballito’s Cameron Coulson is training to finetune his preparations ahead of the All Africa Mixed Fighting (MFC) championships in Johannesburg’s EFC Performance Institute at the end of this month.

This is a critical fight that could serve as a launchpad for the young fighter.

“It is very important for my career, because what started as just a dream is now slowly becoming a reality thanks to my coaches,” said Coulson.

He will be going into the championships with confidence as he won the national MFC championships at Sibaya Casino 3 weeks ago.

“Going to the All Africa championships will be tough because I will probably be the smallest guy in the tournament,” said the lightweight fighter.

“I have 3 bouts to win to make it to the final, so I need to be smart about my timing and not waste too much energy.”

Coulson returned with a gold medal from the 2021 SA national amateur mixed martial arts championships after knocking out Western Province fighter Daniel Hack.

Last year he said he would give himself 2 to 3 years fighting at amateur level before stepping up, and judging by his performances he is right on schedule.
