McGregors set for world championship challenge

Capping off a positive week for the husband-and-wife duo, they both brought back gold from the PYC Surfski Challenge on Sunday.

Salt Rock’s paddling maestros, Hank and Pippa McGregor, will take on the world’s best at the marathon world championships in Portugal in September.

This was confirmed last week when the South African team was picked, with no surprise seeing both McGregors as some of the first names on the sheet.

Hank is already a multiple world champion and will hope to extend his title haul when competing in the K1 (short course and senior) and K2 events – the latter with partner Jasper Mocke.

Pippa will continue her strong partnership with Jenna Nisbet in the K2 women’s event.

Held in fine weather off Durban’s shoreline, Hank powered to victory in the men’s K1, holding off perennial challenger Gene Prato.

“It was great to race surfski again after quite a few solid weeks focusing on marathons. I managed to pull away from the pack early and then it was pretty much a solo paddle for rest of the 22km,” he said.

Showing off their incredible partnership once again, Pippa and Jenna cruised to victory in the women’s doubles.

This following a gold medal in the recent South African marathon championships.

Most impressively, they finished 6th overall in the doubles event, closely chasing the 5th placed pair of Emilio Chiccaro and Brad Allen.

Returning to Salt Rock with yet another medal haul, the McGregors will now fully focus on preparing for the world champs in Ponte de Lima.
