Orphan Fund golf clinic opens doors of opportunity

Mckenna-academies head coach, Emile Steinmann, took the enthusiastic youngsters through the ropes - from taking their first shots to swinging with style.

A putt in the right direction may just swing open new doors of opportunity for underprivileged kids who show golf talent.

This was given a test flight at The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund’s first development golf training session, sponsored by Zimbali Lakes, for 19 kids of the Enduduzweni Care Centre last Friday just before the fund’s annual golf day at Umhlali Country Club.

Steinmann said he was amazed at the rapid pace of their progress.

“Today I saw a lot of energy and talent. These kids had never played or held a gold club before. It was the most fun I’ve had in a long time and hopefully this is the start of an ongoing programme. We are more than willing to teach them.”

One of the youngsters who walked tall after displaying some impressive swings was Manqoba Gxatshakwana.

The 15-year-old Groutville High School pupil said he is a basketball player, but he had always wanted to try golf.

“I love golf and sometimes watch it on TV. I just didn’t know where to start or go to if I wanted to learn the sport. Today, I got that chance and I am super happy about the opportunity,” said Gxatshakwana.

Orphan Fund fundraiser, Sindiswa Vilakazi-Madliwa said she hoped to see the programme established with the help of ongoing sponsorship.

“They are evidently passionate about the game and it was heartwarming to see them eagerly grip the club for the very first time. Everyone agrees there are talented future golfers who could emerge as a result,” said Madliwa.
