Hot action at Maidstone FC legacy futsal tournament

Despite playing high quality futsal throughout the tournament, Westend United were pipped to the post by Chelms FC who took home R5 000 in prize money.

Some of the North Coast’s best footballers showed up at the recent Maidstone FC Legacy Futsal Tournament, celebrating 80 years of the club.

Although Maidstone FC was founded in 1940, the planned 80th anniversary celebrations were disrupted by Covid-19 in 2020 and delayed until this year.

Despite the wait, there was no rust on the footballers aged 10 and up who competed in age group division over two weeks of action at the Tongaat Indoor Stadium.

Finals day beckoned on July 30, with a year’s worth of bragging rights and some great prizes up for grabs.

Maidstone’s own were victorious in the U11s, as they rallied to beat Belchester FC 3-1, with star player Andile Xulu named player of the tournament.

Belvedere FC’s U13 player of the tournament, Nkabinde Nkhanyiso, inspired his team to a penalty shoot-out victory after they finished on 2-2 against Belchester.

There was no such jeopardy in the U15 division as Magwaveni stormed to a 6-0 win over White City, with Thobani Syephu earning the individual award.

In the final junior game, Mthonayza Blue Lions edged past White City 5-2 to claim the U17 title. Tembe Jabulani won the U17 player of the tournament prize.

It was time for the seniors later in the day, with Chelms FC and Westend United slated to compete for premier division glory.

Despite playing high quality futsal throughout the tournament, Westend United were pipped to the post by Chelms FC who took home R5 000 in prize money.

The final match of the day decided the Over-35 division, where Belchester toppled Maidstone after another tense penalty shoot-out.

Regional administrators, Tovey Ramnarain of Tongaat Futsal, Kola Govender of Maidstone FC and Skumbuso Mdluli of SAFA Tongaat all complimented the teams and organisers for a fantastic tournament.
