Mandeni MMA star Ntando Zondi steps up
Zondi's journey is a testament to the indomitable spirit of a young fighter on the rise.
Ntando Zondi’s star in the combat sports world continues to rise.
The Mandeni-born fighter, 25, has pieced together an impressive year in multiple codes after winning gold in the U60kg national Muay Thai Championships in February.
That win qualified him for the World Muay Thai Championships in Thailand in May, where he had the opportunity to test himself against the world’s best in the 57 kilogram elite division.
After eking out a close 29-28 win against Sudan’s Mojamed Ahmed in the qualifying rounds, Zondi was unfortunately knocked out at the quarter-final stage.
Fighting against Russian Aleksandr Abramov (who competed as an authorised neutral athlete), Zondi held his own but was beaten 10-9 in all three rounds for a 30-27 overall loss.
It was a solid first showing from the impressive fighter who was grateful to all those who helped him raise funds to make the trip to Bangkok.
“I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who contributed. Many people came forward to assist me, including my sister’s Grade 3 teacher and I really appreciate the support,” he said.

Upon returning to South Africa, Zondi shifted focus to mixed martial arts, where he fights in the Versus Promotions series.
It is an amateur competition but features highly competitive fighters who hope to turn professional in the fast-growing sport.
He fought Kelvin Smith two weeks ago for the flyweight belt, winning by technical knockout in the first round.
“It was a controversial win because there was speculation that I had won via a groin shot, so they set up a rematch for the belt last weekend,” he said.
The second time in the octagon proved a closer fight, but Zondi again took the victory with a head kick knockout in the third round.
It is yet another momentum builder for the youngster who has big hopes for his combat sport future.
