SA’s best amateur women golfers on show at Umhlali Country Club

Women's Golf South Africa president, Susan Andrew, said she was impressed with the golf on show throughout the week.

Central Gauteng reigned supreme as South Africa’s best amateur women’s golfers descended on Umhlali Country Club (UCC) last week.

The Johannesburg ladies beat a strong KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) team in the ‘A’ Division as the South African Women’s Inter-Provincial Championships returned to UCC for the first time since 2016.

North West earned promotion to the ‘A’ Division after claiming the ‘B’ Division title.

Central Gauteng went unbeaten on their way to claiming the overall ‘A’ Division title.

The annual tournament represents the best in national amateur golf, bringing in 13 teams from eight out of South Africa’s nine provinces.

Teams of four competed from Tuesday to Friday last week, playing head-to-head matches in a matchplay format comprised of foursomes (alternate shot) and singles matches.

Women’s Golf South Africa president, Susan Andrew, said she was impressed with the golf on show throughout the week.

“These are the premier amateur golfers in the country who have been working all year within their unions to make it to this point,” said Andrew.

Kaitlyn van de Vyver (Western Province A) watches her putt miss high on the 16th.

“The standard has been very high and we have seen an amazing spread of golfers, aged 13 to 72.”

In the ‘A’ Division, Central Gauteng went unbeaten throughout the week, claiming five wins and halving their match against KZN.

Their combined 29 points were enough to edge out KZN, who claimed four wins, a draw and a loss for a total of 26.5 points and second place overall.

Western Province A rounded off the podium with 23 points in third, while Ekurhuleni’s sixth-place finish mean they will be relegated to the ‘B’ Division for next year’s event.

Ineke Brynard (Boland) hits a stinger into 16.

Taking their place in the ‘A’ Division will be North West, who played some brilliant golf across the week to claim the ‘B’ Division title and automatic promotion.

They completed an unblemished scorecard, taking five wins from five to earn a comfortable victory ahead of Mpumalanga and Western Province B.

“Umhlali Country Club has been an amazing host for the tournament and couldn’t have been more welcoming to us,” said Andrew.

“We were also very grateful for the good weather after heavy winds the week before and rain over the weekend.”
