Ballito Dolphins celebrate strong rugby league finish, eye Murray Cup success

With five wins out of nine games, the Ballito Dolphins rugby team ended the season on a high

The Ballito Dolphins rugby team capped a successful league season with their best table finish in years.

The team was buoyed by the return of some stalwarts, plenty of exciting new blood and better training and matchday facilities at Umhlali Prep and Oaklands Equestrian Estate respectively.

It all contributed to some fantastic rugby on the pitch, but also a great feeling around the club with supporters coming out to home games in their droves.

“The Dolphins ended the season on a slightly disappointing note with the last game of the league against Maritzburg Rugby Club being scratched when Maritzburg were unable to honour the fixture in Ballito,” said Dolphins chairman, Mark Svenningsen.

“However the season as a whole was a tremendous success with the Dolphins securing 3rd spot behind winners Hillcrest and second placed Kokstad.”

Season highs included handing Kokstad their first defeat of the season and winning home and away against the South Coast Warriors – the first time in 12 years.

The Dolphins ultimately registered five wins from their nine games, also delivering a positive points difference.

Although the league season has now wrapped up, the Dolphins’ top-four finish earned them entry into the first division of the Murray Cup – the premier club knockout competition in the province.

They will lock horns against Hillcrest again this weekend, with final details of the game still to be announced.

“The local boys are very much up for an upset this weekend, so follow The Ballito Dolphins on social media to find out where the fixture will be played this weekend,” said Svenningsen.
