Ballito teen trio conquer Amashova amidst rain and mist

The Amashova is the oldest road classic cycle race in South Africa.

The DriveTrain Academy’s incredible crop of young cycling talent grabbed three gold medals at Sunday’s Amashova National Classic Race.

Local stars Errin Mackridge (Junior U19 female), Madison Bateson (U17 female) and Josh Paul (U17 male) all claimed the top spots in their age groups at the event.

While the rest of Ballito was hunkering down for rainy weather on Sunday morning, the trio made the trip up to Pietermaritzburg and cycled back amid misty and rainy conditions. But the weather made little difference to the three riders, all of whom also currently hold the South African Road Racing jersey in their respective age groups.

Errin and Madison took off together at 6.15am and acted as each other’s team leader and domestique throughout, crossing the finish line at the same time – 106 kilometres and two hours and 52 minutes later. Errin’s closest challenger was 23 minutes behind her pace, while Madison won her division by an eye-watering one hour and 22 minutes.

It was a little bit of a later start for Josh, who got his pedalling underway at 6.25am. His division was comparatively closer, but he was still able to win by around seven minutes after posting a swift time of 2.38:32. Teammate Connor Hawkins also reached the podium, claiming a bronze medal in 2.47:26. Gustav Rabie finished 10th in the same division, while Daniel van der Watt also crossed the line in 10th in the U23 male race.
