Shelley Jones, Jaclyn Capazario and Rochelle van Staden are Masters Hockey World Cup champions!
The North Coast trio claimed gold medals with the South African women’s over-35 team after beating the Netherlands 4-1 in the final in Cape Town on Monday afternoon.
It brought to a close a perfect competition for the ladies who went unbeaten on their way to the title, toppling traditional women’s hockey powerhouses Germany, Australia and Argentina along the way.

Such was the strength of the team that Karlien Vellinga’s goal for the Netherlands in the final was the only one that the South Africans conceded all tournament.
Van Staden certainly played a role in that record as one of the team’s goalkeepers, while Jones and Capazario delivered on the offensive end with a goal apiece along the way.
Their gold medal was just South Africa’s second masters World Cup win in history, following the men’s over-40 victory against Australia just two hours earlier.
Elsewhere in the competition, the North Coast had 10 other players involved, with five representing South African teams and five picked to two International Alliance squads.
Danielle Robert-Hardman (captain) and Joanne le Roux suited up for the women’s over-35 IMC team – essentially the South African ‘B’ team for the age group.
They claimed two wins from their allotted six games in the tournament, with Robert-Hardman notching two goals.
The women’s over-40 team – which included Lauren Glossop and Genevieve Chisholm – had a difficult start to their tournament but ended it with a bang, beating Germany in a thrilling penalty shoot-out in their closer.
Chisholm was the South African star in that shoot-out too, scoring two of the team’s five goals.
Zenon Jagiela was the only local male player in the South African teams, representing the men’s over-35 IMC outfit. They finished as the best IMC team in their age group, claiming wins against Australia IMC and Zimbabwe, a draw against Germany and three losses.
Clyde Milsom and Grant Wills turned out for the men’s over-40 International Alliance team, claiming two draws against the USA and Kenya.
The remaining North Coast players – Lauren de Klerk, Bronwyn Thorpe and Chantel Robert – represented the women’s over-40 International Alliance team.
