Mounted games thrill at KZN meet at Oaklands Equestrian Estate

Tana Zoghby named top rider at gymkhana games.

More than 20 riders showed horsemanship and athleticism aplenty during a fun mounted games meet-up at Oaklands Equestrian Estate on Sunday.

The showcase was held to introduce newcomers to the mounted games discipline, also known as gymkhana, which saw riders and their horses take on a series of skill events.

There are 13 events in the South African Western Mounted Games (SAWMGA) catalogue, of which five are picked for regional qualifiers and 12 are selected for nationals.

Riders and their horses must master a wide variety of skills to be competition ready on the day.

“We are hoping to get more people involved in the sport. KZN is the largest equestrian province, but we have the smallest mounted games contingent,” said SAWMGA provincial secretary, Arinda van den Berg.

“It is such a fun sport and is always a great day out for families. We have a great community who is always helping each other and I can say for sure that a horse friend is one you keep for life.”

Although the meet on Sunday did not count for any official points, times were still recorded.
