Chaos and complaints at Roof of Africa race

GPS errors and delays frustrate riders.

Angry Roof of Africa riders have voiced their dissatisfaction about what they say was shoddy organisation which marred this year’s race.

While Wade Young claimed a record-equalling ninth Hard Enduro victory in the Lesotho Mountains, matching the legendary Alfie Cox for the most wins, this feat was overshadowed by riders’ complaints about mismanagement and technical hitches.

Ballito racer Jason Brown was among those who described the situation as chaotic.

Riders took to social media to express their displeasure, particularly with issues surrounding the race’s timing system, GPS accuracy, and seeding process.

These problems led to confusion over podium finishes, with some riders unable to complete the course. The failed timing system caused disputes over results. GPS inaccuracies further complicated matters as some riders, including Brown, were reportedly led off-course into the wrong category.

Brown, who completed his fourth Roof event in the Bronze category, noted a significant problem with the course’s navigation, as GPS routes overlapped, causing him to veer into the ‘Silver’ category path.

On top of that, the lack of seeding for the second day caused a bottleneck, as amateur and pro competitors were forced to race together. The congestion resulted into an almost two-hour delay on the track.

“Day one was a free-for-all because the timing bombed out, so there was no official placing,” said Brown.

“Many riders did not finish the second loop. Those who did wasted about five hours of energy completing a loop that wasn’t counted in the overall standings.”

Chairperson of the Lesotho Off Road Association Mopeli Ntabe on Sunday issued a statement.

“I would like to offer explanations for some of these outcomes,” wrote Ntabe. “However, due to the pending court of enquiry called by Motorsport South Africa (MSA), there are many details that cannot be discussed until the proceedings have been concluded.”
