Ohana Aquatics swimmers break 21 records in recent galas in Durban and Richards Bay

Umhlali’s Ohana Aquatics club has developed a habit of breaking records.
The club’s champion swimmers knocked over 21 separate records over the course of two galas at the back end of January.

At the KwaZulu-Natal Masters Swimmers Gala in Durban on January 25, Ohana’s more seasoned competitors had the opportunity to show off their swimming skills. Ohana co-founder and former South African swimmer, Paul Bees, led the way with four broken records, followed by Bianca Meyer’s two and one apiece from Kristi Daly and Jeff Norton.

Bees said he was thrilled to return to competition, while Daly highlighted the supportive environment created by the masters swimming community.
The rest of Ohana’s top-quality competitors took on 19 other clubs and a total of 280 swimmers at the uShaka Champs Gala in Richard’s Bay on January 25 and 26. They matched their masters mates by breaking 13 meet records, but also managed to finish as the first overall club with a combined 1 739.5 points.

There were plenty of Ohana swimmers in action at last weekend’s Midmar Mile for good measure, a busy start to 2025. The club continues to live out its core message, inspiring swimmers young and old to ‘just keep swimming’.
