KwaDukuza’s Dawnheights wins local cricket derby against Tongaat’s Railways

Dawnheights’ Santir Bageloo starred with three wickets and a run-a-ball half-century.

KwaDukuza triumphed over Tongaat in a much-anticipated 20-over Promotion League cricket derby on Sunday.

Dawnheights Cricket Club A (DCC) from KwaDukuza were clinically efficient after winning the toss and putting in Tongaat’s Railway Cricket Club (RCC) to bat at Crawford International North Coast.

RCC opener Cody Gertze managed a steady start of 20 off 18 and was supported by middle-order batsmen Tyrese Daniel who top-scored with 35 from 39. The rest of the batting order crumbled around them however, and they were limited to just 81 after being bowled out in the 19th over. DCC captain Salman Mohamed and Santir Bageloo were the chief destroyers, claiming three wickets apiece.

Santir was far from done for the day and returned alongside his brother Adesh to open the batting. Santir was in brilliant form, notching up an unbeaten half century at a run-a-ball. Adesh contributed with 25 not-out at the other end and DCC claimed a dominant ten-wicket victory.

The DCC B side were also in action on Sunday when they took on City Lads in a 20-over contest at the Gledhow Cricket Club.

City Lads won the toss and chose to bowl, hoping to limit DCC to a low total. DCC’s batsmen had other ideas however, steadily racking up runs on their way to posting a score of 149. Manoj Pundith and Ali Raza top-scored with 32 and 31 respectively, but the runs were split evenly across the batting order.

DCC were equally impressive in their bowling effort, limiting City Lads to 81-all-out after 19.1 overs. Ashen Balbahdur grabbed 3-13, while Ali and Daniel Ramnarain claimed two apiece on the way to a 68-run victory.

Railway 3s also played on Sunday morning, competing against Delta T1 at the Tills Cricket Ground in Overport.

Delta won the toss and batted first, notching up 122 in their allotted 20 overs. Aqueel Rabin and Linoshen Moodley both claimed two scalps and helped to stem the flow of runs. Wicket-keeper Rushay Premlal grabbed two catches, two stumpings and was also involved in a run-out with his brother Yashkar to round off a great fielding performance.

The men from Tongaat also impressed with the bat, chasing down the target in 17.1 overs with 9 wickets in hand. Linoshen top-scored with 37, followed by Dhiren Balwanth (36) and Rowen Sheomungal (27). RCC won by 9 wickets.
