Ballito Dolphins build momentum after strong start to the season

The men in pink and blue are playing away for the third weekend in a row but will need support when back on home ground.

The Ballito Dolphins’ 2025 season is officially underway and the club needs the community to get behind them.

The first outing for the men in pink and blue was a few warm-up games in Mandeni on February 22. Using it as a final trial, the Dolphins fielded a ‘Probables’ and ‘Possibles’ team who took on Ushaka Warriors and Hluhluwe respectively. The Probables earned their name in a convincing 30-7 victory, while the Possibles unfortunately lost out 20-7.

This past weekend, the Dolphins travelled to the Bluff Harlequins to take part in their popular Ronnie van Rooyen Day. There the Dolphins seconds took on Crusaders thirds in a fantastic, close match. Newcomer Jesse September crossed the whitewash, as did young guns Asanda Nduku and Joel du Preez and Dolphins regular Johan Venter. Those tries helped the team to an excellent 24-17 victory.

The Dolphins Possibles had stiff competition in the form of Varsity College seconds.

“Gavin Lombaard had barnstorming game, rolling back the years to when he captained Sandown High firsts! That speedy youngster has now transformed into a formidable lock,” said Dolphins chairman, Mark Svenningsen.

“He was joined on the scoreboard by ‘Groovy’ Grove Akker but alas it was all in a losing effort, going down 17-12.”

The Dolphins are in action again this weekend, when they will travel to Hluhluwe Rugby Club to take part in the Alpha Cup.

There is still time to join the team ahead of a busy league season. They practice every Tuesday and Thursday at Umhlali Prep at 6pm.
