Dawnheights veterans clinch victory in low-scoring thriller

The men from KwaDukuza were chasing less than a hundred, but a bowler-friendly wicket made things tricky.

Dawnheights Cricket Club veterans triumphed over Crusaders in a low-scoring but thrilling battle at the weekend.

Crusaders won the toss at the Gledhow grounds on Saturday morning and elected to bat first. The men from Durban North started steadily, but fell apart in the middle and lower order once wickets began to tumble on the bowler-friendly pitch.

Dawnheights captain Mags Iyer was the chief destroyer, registering figures of 3 for 16 in his six over spell. Adhir and Suveer Maharaj provided solid backing on the way to bowling Crusaders out for 95 after 29.4 overs.

The Dawnheights chase started shakily, but Rajen Naidoo and Dr Sandhir Maharaj steadied the ship with a 25-run partnership. Wickets started falling quickly after Naidoo’s dismissal however, and the KwaDukuza outfit stumbled from 45/3 to 76/6.

It took a match-winning middle-order innings from Prishen Ramprasad to get Dawnheights over the line. Ramprasad scored 34 not out and earned the man of the match award for his efforts. Dawnheights won by four wickets.

Club president Shaneel Krish Maharaj congratulated the team and called on supporters to rally for the club’s 40th anniversary matches throughout the rest of the year.
