Ubuntu aquatics swimmers shine at Dolphin Mile swimming challenge

The Shaka’s Head youngsters are part of the Ubuntu programme which has taught over 1 000 children life-saving swimming skills.

Nine young swimmers from Ubuntu Aquatics impressed at Sunday’s Dolphin Mile, a popular ocean swim series that draws open-water enthusiasts from across KwaZulu-Natal.

The seven-part winter series includes distances of 800m, 1.6km and 3.2km.

Representing the Shaka’s Head-based programme were Sbusiso Zondi (15), Sabelo Mnyandu (14), Siyanda Nxumalo (15), Anele Magwaza (15), Zweli Xulu (11), Ntokozo Mthembu (15), Samukelisiwe Mzindle (16), Lubanzi Mbele (14) and Lubanzi Shoba (12) – all tackling the ocean challenge with determination and pride.

Founded in 2018, Ubuntu Aquatics has empowered over 1 000 children with life-saving swimming and surfing skills. The non-profit was co-founded by Koketso Nkosi, a former Duke University student, and Salt Rock lifeguard Linda Hlophe, whose shared passion for youth development launched the initiative.

“We started off relying heavily on donor funding,” said Nkosi. “Eventually, parents got involved, covering transport costs while we handled the coaching.”

Today, Ubuntu Aquatics is a thriving youth development programme producing strong competitors, with swimmers having raced in events like the Midmar Mile and now the Dolphin Mile.

The initiative also provides job opportunities: 12 young people are employed as instructors and volunteers, receiving stipends and support toward formal coaching accreditation.

“Many of our matriculants start as volunteers and eventually become certified coaches at reputable schools,” said programme co-ordinator Nkosi. “It’s not just about swimming; it’s about creating future leaders.”

Looking ahead, Ubuntu Aquatics hopes to expand by introducing its ‘Learn to Swim’ programme into local schools and offering water safety training for both children and adults.

With community support and continued growth, Ubuntu Aquatics is helping shape a generation of confident swimmers – and future changemakers – across KwaDukuza.
