Liberté Volleyball Club stars impress at community team building tournament

The Tongaat-based club is one of the oldest in the country and has enjoyed a winning start to 2025.

Liberté Volleyball Club hosted a spirited intra-club tournament at the Ballito Farmer’s Market, uniting members for competitive play and community building on Workers’ Day.

Eleven teams, each comprising two players, participated in the team building beach volleyball tournament.

Brothers Jared and Joseph Pillay took home the trophy after beating Tariq Ally and Shaylen Rajlal in the final. Keanin Sattiah and Chiraj Kassie finished third. Sattiah (25) was voted the most impressive player of the tournament.

Keanin Sattiah was voted most impressive player of the tournament.

Liberté was founded in Tongaat in 1978 and is one of the longest-running volleyball clubs in South Africa.

“The club got its name because of the struggle and fight for freedom during apartheid,” said club chairperson Jayson Govender.

Liberté Volleyball Club’s social tournament swapped courts for sand at The Ballito Farmer’s Market.

The club has a senior men’s and women’s team and a masters team for the over 40s and plays its home fixtures at the Tongaat Sports Centre. Govender said the social tournament was more about bonding than competing.

All the matches were tightly contested.

“We were looking for somewhere to host this event locally because it’s tough for the players to travel to Durban. The tournament was about building up team spirit within the club. It’s been a fun day for the players, with their families out supporting and having a good time.”

Govender would like to make the beach sand event an annual tournament and Ballito Farmer’s Market manager, Anni du Plessis, agrees.

Families and friends enjoy refreshments from the cool confines of the sideline.

“The beach volleyball added to the energy of the day, and that’s definitely something we’ll repeat in future.”

It’s been a good start to the 2025 season for the club, stockpiling trophies and individual awards in the 2025 KZN South African Masters Volleyball Association (SAMVA) Craft Intelligence Series.

SAMVA caters for men and women in the 30+ age category. Liberté has dominated the first two series in all categories.

No holds barred as teams fought for the title.

Liberté’s 30+ Young Masters males and females and men’s 45+ Masters all won back-to-back KZN SAMVA Craft Intelligence Series tournaments in March and April.

The club plays every Tuesday and Thursday at 7pm at the Tongaat Sports Centre. To join, contact Jayson on 084 234 1718.
