Getting to grips with pétanque at inaugural Ballito Farmer’s Market tournament

Some Irish visitors showed their class to win, but the beloved French game has earned a bunch of new followers.

Six teams brought skill and strategy to the first-ever Pétanque Cup at the Ballito Farmer’s Market last week, marking a lively debut for the classic French game.

Pétanque originally evolved from jeu provençal as an adaptation for players with a disability affecting their legs. However, it quickly became popular among able-bodied players. It is a throwing game using metal balls, but with no run-up. Players’ feet must remain firmly on the ground. The objective is to score points by having boules closer to the target than the opponent after all boules have been thrown.

This is achieved by throwing or rolling boules closer to the small target ball, officially called a jack or by hitting the opponents’ boules away from the target, while standing inside a circle with both feet on the ground. The game is best played on hard dirt or gravel.

“We had six teams participate, with two younger teams playing for fun instead of as part of the tournament. Everyone really enjoyed themselves,” said Ballito Farmer’s Market manager, Anni du Plessis.

“What made the day special was seeing people of all ages get involved. There was a great vibe, with spectators cheering and families relaxing around the court. We really believe in encouraging an active outdoor lifestyle and creating spaces where the community can come together, so we’re excited to grow this into a bigger tournament in the near future – something fun, healthy and social.”
