Ballito rhythmic gymnast enjoys first taste of international competition
Riley Gouws (14) recently represented South Africa at Junior Worlds in Bulgaria.
Ballito’s rising rhythmic gymnast Riley Gouws recently enjoyed her first international tournament and gained invaluable experience against the world’s best.
The 14-year-old competed alongside four Durban-based teammates in two events at the Junior World Rhythmic Gymnastics Games in Sofia, Bulgaria from June 18-22. While the team did not place in either clubs or hoops, they brought back crucial knowledge of what it takes to win at the highest level of their sport.
Riley and teammates Naluthando Mbelu, Abigail Smulders, Hanna Chengiah and Thandolwethu Mthiyane secured their spot in Bulgaria by way of a top performance at the South African trials earlier this year. The group entered full training mode in preparation for Worlds, practicing up to 18 hours a day at Umhlanga-based Ocean Gymnastics and the Glenwood Gymnastics Club.
Taking guidance from coaches Tayla Henry, Robyn Mueller and Kayleigh Koekemoer, the girls ensured they were competitive on the biggest stage and came back with their heads held high.
For Riley, the competition was a milestone on her journey in the sport, after first starting as an artistic gymnast. Now she hopes to inspire the next generation of rhythmic gymnasts to chase their dreams.
