Tongaat cricketer named national Intellectually Impaired Player of the Year
Sebastian Govender is a deadly left-arm spinner who plays for Railways Cricket Club.
Tongaat spin bowler Sebastian Govender capped a brilliant breakthrough season by claiming the national Intellectually Impaired Cricket Player of the Year award.
The 29-year-old received the award at a prestigious Cricket South Africa Pathways ceremony at Emperor’s Palace in Johannesburg on July 31, sharing the stage with some of the country’s most celebrated cricket stars.
It marked the culmination of a fantastic year for Govender, who earned national recognition while representing KZN at an inter-provincial tournament, where he was named both best player and best bowler. The performance secured him a long-awaited first call-up to the South African disabled cricket team – a lifelong dream.
Govender has limited use of his right leg and arm, which have remained fixed in position since childhood. That has not stopped him from delivering deadly left-arm off-spin, honed over four years at Tongaat’s Railways Cricket Club and, more recently, with the KZN disabled team.
