Ballito racer claims top-15 finish at OCR World Championships in Sweden

Aristo Nolan more than held his own against some of the world’s best obstacle course racers in Sweden.

Ballito’s Aristo Nolan produced a standout performance at the 2025 Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) World Championships, held in Gothenburg, Sweden, from September 11 to 14.

Organised by Swedish Athletics in collaboration with Tough Viking, the event drew elite athletes from 140 nations to tackle gruelling terrain and endurance-testing obstacles.

Nolan (28) finished second in his Men’s Elite Senior heat and placed 14th overall in his 25-29 age group in the 12km standard course last Friday, clocking a time of 1:11:36 – a remarkable achievement considering the field of more than 38 world-class competitors.

Aristo Nolan trained for three years to earn his Proteas’ colours.

A seasoned athlete and founder of Taurus Performance, Nolan also competed in the 3km short course on Thursday. While he did not place in his heat or age group, he said he was proud to wear the green and gold and represent South Africa on the world stage.

The opening day featured the lightning-fast 3km short course, packed with technical obstacles and high-intensity racing. Nolan, competing against some of the world’s best, faced a few challenges but pushed through with grit and determination.

Aristo Nolan competed against the best obstacle racers in the world.

“The short course was incredibly fast and one small mistake can cost you dearly,” said Nolan.

“I learned a lot about my pacing and obstacle strategy, which set me up perfectly for the 12km race.”

The 12km standard course was the weekend’s marquee event, testing athletes’ endurance, strength and mental toughness. Nolan said he returned to the course with renewed focus and executed a near-flawless race.

“I felt in control from start to finish. The obstacles were challenging, but I trusted my preparation and it paid off. Crossing that finish line knowing I gave my all was an incredible feeling.”
