Louis Albertse claims Sunshine Tour victory at Umhlali CC after dramatic playoff

The Dundee golfer birdied the second playoff hole to beat Pieter Moolman.

Louis Albertse pushed through a pulsating play-off to claim his third Sunshine Tour title at Umhlali Country Club last Friday.

The 29-year-old from Dundee held his nerve to sink a 12-foot birdie putt on the second play-off hole, securing victory over Pieter Moolman in the SunBet Challenge hosted by Sun Sibaya.

The win marks a significant boost for Albertse, who has recently endured a challenging period in his career.

“I am not going to lie, the nerves were pretty hectic,” said an emotional Albertse.

“I did not get off to the best start, but I stuck to my guns and followed my processes. I hit some really good shots near the end. I am very pleased and grateful to win.”

Players and fans rushed the 18th green and showered Louis Albertse with celebratory drinks.

Albertse carded rounds of 70, 66 and 66 to finish tied at 11 under par with Moolman, who posted scores of 71, 65 and 66.

Both players started the final round as part of a five-man leading pack and it was Moolman who initially surged ahead, leading by two shots at the turn. But Albertse delivered when it mattered, reeling off four birdies on the back nine to close the gap.

“Play-offs can go either way because you have a 50/50 chance. I just tried to hit a good tee shot, better than in regulation and I managed to do that,” he said.

The victory lifts Albertse to eighth place on the Sunshine Tour’s Order of Merit.

He described the North Coast as a “home away from home”, crediting his family for helping him stay calm and relaxed during the week.

Louis Albertse makes the lonely walk to the 18th green on the final playoff hole.

“Golf is a lonely sport, but to be with family was great – it definitely helped me this week,” said Albertse, who stayed with his aunt and uncle at Prince’s Grant Golf Estate.

“It was fabulous having Louis stay with us again; he grew up in front of my eyes. I am so proud of him!” said his aunt, Brenda Albertse.

At the prize-giving, Brenda praised her nephew’s dedication but noted that he has struggled with homesickness and being away from family.

“It has been tough for him being overseas. Playing professional sport takes a lot of commitment and it is not always easy,” she said.
