Dawnheights cricketers edge out close rain-affected match

The men from KwaDukuza made the most of their shortened 15 overs against West Cricket Club.

Dawnheights Cricket Club’s (DCC) bowlers stole a 13-run victory over West Cricket Club (WCC) in a shortened T20 clash on the weekend.

With intermittent showers forcing a reduction to 15 overs per side, WCC won the toss and opted to bowl, a decision that initially seemed wise given the bowler-friendly conditions.

DCC’s innings began steadily, with openers Manav Malik and Santir Bageloo putting on 25 runs in four overs. Despite wickets falling regularly, Bageloo held firm, crafting a mature 38 off 40 balls, including three boundaries and a six. His knock proved pivotal as DCC posted a competitive 84/9.

WCC’s chase started confidently but was quickly derailed by Dawnheights’ disciplined bowling unit. Captain Shivan “Copper” Singh’s decision to open with spinner Trynn “Spanner” Naidoo paid off handsomely. Naidoo delivered a masterclass, taking 2 wickets for just 4 runs in three overs, including a maiden. He removed both openers – Nkosinathi Mtshali (1) and Mthobisi Nkosi (4) – to give DCC the upper hand.

Player of the Match Santir Bageloo helped Dawnheights to victory after a standout all-round display.

The fielding was equally sharp, highlighted by a brilliant run-out from the Bageloo brothers, Santir and Adesh. Kumar maintained the pressure with 2/5, while Malik and veteran Salman Mahomed chipped in with key wickets. Mahomed’s 2/16 sealed the win as WCC were restricted to 71/9.

Bageloo was named Player of the Match for his all-round performance, which included top-scoring, two catches and a run-out.

A proud skipper Singh praised his side: “The boys executed the game plan perfectly. Our bowlers were disciplined and everyone contributed.”
