Hat-trick of weekend wins for Dawnheights Cricket Club

The promotion team came just short in the T20 cup final following an excellent campaign.

Dawnheights Cricket Club enjoyed a bumper weekend of action with three thrilling wins and a narrow loss across multiple leagues.

The club’s (DCC) veterans team were in action on Saturday, while the ‘B’ team played once and the promotion team twice on Sunday.

Bowling first against Meadowridge CC veterans at Gledhow Cricket Ground on Saturday morning, DCC veterans tore through their opposition. Kevin Chinechu (3/10) and Dawood Mather (2/10) led the charge as Meadowridge were bowled out for just 47 in 15 overs.

Rajendren Naidoo then smashed 40 off 18 balls to seal the chase in less than four overs and with it, a 10-wicket victory. Captain Adhir Maharaj praised his side’s “professionalism and composure.”

The DCC B team took on Warriors CC at Gledhow the following morning and also bowled first. Maharaj (2/13) and Hardik Valand (2/10) were the chief destroyers as the visiting team limped to 74-all-out. Maharaj and Shriyan Naidoo then took the team to a comfortable 6-wicket victory with unbeaten scores of 24 and 18 respectively.

Salman Mohamed earned his man-of-the-match award for excellent figures of 5/17.

On Sunday morning, the DCC promotion side faced Simplex RHCC at Collegians in the Promotion League T20 Cup semi-final.

The men from KwaDukuza fielded first once again and set about limiting Simplex to 101/8 in their allotted 20 overs. Salman Mohamed starred with figures of 5/17 – later earning the man-of-the-match award for his performance.

In DCC’s run chase, Zulfikar Moolana and Manav Malik guided the team to 102/4 with scores of 44 and 32 respectively. The 6-wicket win qualified them for the final against Pinetown Topham, which was played at Danville Park later on Sunday afternoon.

Pinetown won the toss and chose to bat first, ensuring a DCC team would chase for the fourth time in as many matches. The decision paid off as Pinetown posted a competitive 168/8.

DCC’s Saieshan Logenathan registered an unbeaten 55 off 40 balls, but he could not find a batting partner to match his pace of scoring. Economical bowling limited DCC to 133/7, handing the men from Pinetown a 35-run win and the cup title.
