Umhlali Country Club ‘Frogs’ win provincial interclub golf competition

Keith Ferreira, Mark Chamberlain and Steve Wilson beat an Umkomaas CC trio in pouring rain down the South Coast.

A trio of Umhlali Country Club golfers claimed a convincing provincial interclub title down the South Coast last weekend.

Club golf captain Keith Ferreira, Mark Chamberlain and Steve Wilson brought home the ‘Frogs’ division title, beating Umkomaas CC 2½ to ½ in the matchplay final. It is the first time UCC have won the Frogs trophy.

The Natal Interclub was hosted across Selborne, Umkomaas and Umdoni golf clubs over the weekend across four separate divisions. ‘A’ and ‘B’ divisions played regular medal golf, while the Frogs and Frogs seniors played individual stableford (where higher points are better). The top four teams from each division qualified for the knockout stages, played in a matchplay format on Sunday.

The UCC Frogs trio finished third in the initial round and qualified to face Alliance GC in a Sunday morning semi-final at Selborne. They won 2½ to ½ and set-up a meeting against Umkomaas – who had beat Simbithi Country Club 3 to 0 – in the final.

Wilson got off to a hot start in the final and wrapped up his match early, winning 6 and 4. Both other matches went to the death, with Ferreira claiming a 1 up victory and Chamberlain halving his game to ensure the trophy came back to Umhlali.

“The final was played in really windy and rainy conditions, which made it difficult for everyone,” said Ferreira.

“It’s great that Umhlali gets to lift the trophy after participating in this event for so many years.”
