Els for Autism charity golf challenge a success at Zimbali Lakes

The golf challenge series has so far raised over $40-million in Canada and the USA.

Golfers from across KwaZulu-Natal gathered at Zimbali Lakes on Friday for the North Coast’s inaugural Els for Autism Golf Challenge charity event.

The golf day drew 88 players to the newly completed Ernie Els Signature Course, all united in support of the Els for Autism Foundation, a global organisation that assists autistic individuals, their families and professionals in 38 countries. Since its inception in 2011, the Golf Challenge has raised over US$40.6-million through events in the United States and Canada.

In South Africa, the foundation operates two centres, one in Cape Town and another in Johannesburg, currently supporting 115 families with therapy, education and resources.

The foundation was founded in 2009 by former World No. 1 and four-time Major winner Ernie Els, his wife Liezl and publisher Marvin R. Shanken. Their motivation came from their son, Ben, who is affected by autism.

“The challenges for the parents are hard, so we help the parents. Every form of autism is different, and you almost have to look after the parents more than the child,” said Els for Autism commercial manager Nico van Rensburg, a six-time Sunshine Tour winner and close friend of Els, who has spearheaded fundraising efforts for the past 11 years.

Van Rensburg has hosted 134 charity golf days across South Africa.

“All the money raised goes to Els for Autism, who then distribute the funds to autism charities of choice.

“We also go to schools and upgrade facilities, such as play areas or computer systems.”

What began as 12 annual events on Els-designed courses will be streamlined to nine from 2026, ensuring sustainability while maintaining impact. The Zimbali Lakes event is set to become a staple on the local calendar.

“Next year, when the clubhouse is built, we will have even more fun while supporting this cause,” said Van Rensburg.
