North Coast Seniors enjoy competitive championships at Prince’s Grant

The annual event drew 76 seasoned golfers from across the North Coast and Zululand.

The North Coast Seniors (NCS) recently teed off for glory at the Age Group Championships held at Prince’s Grant Coastal Golf Estate last month.

The annual event drew 76 seasoned golfers from across the North Coast and Zululand for a day of competitive golf, camaraderie and exceptional play on November 20. Competitors, ranging in age from 50 to over 75, battled it out for top honours in their respective divisions, showcasing skill, sportsmanship and an enduring passion for the game.

Each month for the past 10 years, NCS members from Umhlali, Simbithi, Maidstone, Prince’s Grant, Darnall, Zimbali and Mtunzini country clubs have competed in various formats before contending for the Age Group Championship title at year-end.

Umhlali CC emerged as strong contenders with Peter Botha claiming overall victory and Heinz Niebuhr triumphing in the 70-74 division. Maidstone GC also won two titles, with Kitten Chetty clinching the 50-59 age group and Nelson Odayer the 60-65 category, while Graham Allen from Simbithi CC took the over-75 crown. Prince’s Grant’s Harry Arrangies won the 65-69 division, while fellow club members Vaughan Baptist, Steve Joubert and Basil Moodley finished as runners-up in their respective categories.

Beyond the championship, the NCS calendar includes monthly competitions across Umhlali, Simbithi, Maidstone, Prince’s Grant, Darnall, Zimbali and Mtunzini country clubs. The year-long Order of Merit and Interclub Challenge add further excitement, with Prince’s Grant currently holding the interclub title and Simbithi’s Corrie Schoeman leading the Order of Merit standings.

Earlier this year, Basil Kinsella captured the Umhlali Club Championship.

Tournament co-ordinator Gary Byrne praised the event’s success.

“It was a fantastic day! The weather was perfect and players enjoyed competitive golf, great camaraderie and a few beers,” said Byrne.
