Ballito trio of young golfers clean up at provincial awards
The future of golfing talent on the North Coast is bright!
06Three young golfers from Ballito swept the 2024/25 KZN SA Kids Golf awards, held at Prince’s Grant Golf Estate on November 30.
Founded in 2004, SA Kids Golf provides a stepping stone for golfers aged five to 18, with tournaments endorsed by PGA South Africa and the South African Golf Association. The year-end function celebrated an outstanding season for the region’s rising stars.
Zimele Gasa (7), a Grade 1 pupil at Curro Salt Rock, dominated the Boys 5-6 category. He claimed six victories from 10 tournaments and walked away with three major accolades: Most Points, Best Stroke Average and Most Improved Player.
“I am very grateful for the support from my mom, and I am proud to represent my family, school and province,” said Zimele.
Carter Ross (9), a Grade 3 pupil at Umhlali Preparatory School, was named SA Kids KZN Player of the Year for the 9-hole category (10 years and younger). He also secured first place for stroke average in the Boys 7-8 age group.
“This honour means so much to me,” said Carter, who praised his coaches, family and friends for their support.
“Thank you for being my best supporters. I wouldn’t be here without you; I love you all very much! To my friends and playing partners, this all started with a dream, so keep dreaming big, this is just the beginning for all of us.”
Matthew Smith (15), a Grade 9 pupil at Ashton International College Ballito, was awarded Best Stroke Average and Player of the Year for the 2024/25 season. All awardees received a custom blue blazer and tie along with their trophies.
“Winning the SA Kids KZN Player of the Year and having the lowest stroke average this season means so much to me,” said Matthew.
“I am really grateful to my coaches, teammates and my family for supporting me.”
Matthew also highlighted his international experience as a career milestone.
“Representing SA Kids Golf and playing in Northern Ireland at the World Champion of Champions in July, where I finished 9th in the Boys U15 category, was a big learning experience. I’m excited to keep working hard and improving as I prepare for next season.”
