New coaches, new players, new energy as Dolphins rugby pre-season begins

The team is getting ready with three training sessions a week, hoping to improve on a disappointing 2025.

The new year has brought renewed optimism for the Ballito Dolphins Rugby Club as preparations for the 2026 season get underway.

With pre-season officially in motion, the focus has shifted to rebuilding fitness, shaking off festive-season sluggishness and setting the tone for what the squad hopes will be a revitalised campaign.

The players finish their beach training with the traditional huddle.

Training sessions are already in full swing, with the team meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6pm at Umhlali Preparatory School. Mondays are dedicated to conditioning on Salt Rock Beach, where the squad gathers at 5.30pm to push endurance and speed.

Preseason is in full swing for the Ballito Dolphins Rugby Club players.

During the off-season, players followed tailored gym programmes designed by Taurus Performance founder Aristo Nolan. These strength cycles, customised for each position, aimed to reduce injuries after a difficult previous season that saw 23 players sidelined with issues ranging from mild to serious.

The players are all smiles after Monday evenings workout.

More than 30 players took part in this Monday’s beach session, led by strength-and-conditioning player-coach Triston du Toit.

Club captain Carlo Gresse (29) says team spirit is the highest he has seen in years.

“The off-season has been good and the feeling in camp is really positive. There’s a completely different energy compared to previous years. I have never seen the boys smiling after fitness sessions!” said Gresse.

Former Ballito Dolphins Colts chairman Anton von Allerman has joined as backs and skills coach, bringing fresh ideas. Gresse says the revamped coaching setup is making an impact.

Short sprints were the order of the day.

“They bring a totally different dynamic. There’s more freedom for the guys to express themselves.”

Head coach Dawson, returning after a break, echoed the sense of renewal.

“There is a lekker spirit within the group. A lot of new boys, some really talented players, will push our veterans. This just feels different,” he said.
