More than 200 runners tackle heat and hills at Blythedale Trail Run

The race winds through coastal forest, beach sections and flowing singletrack, eventually finishing at Grumpy's Beach Bar.

More than 200 eager runners and walkers converged on the Blythedale Event Bowl on Sunday for the annual Blythedale Trail Run, a highlight on the local outdoor calendar.

Hosted by KZN Trail Running (KZNTR), the event drew 223 participants of all ages who tackled the 5km, 10km and 19km routes in hot and humid conditions.

The race began at 6.30am along the shoreline before winding through coastal forest, beach sections and flowing singletrack, eventually finishing at Grumpy’s Beach Bar, where finishers enjoyed a well-earned breakfast and refreshments.

“This year’s event went very well,” said race organiser Dane Garvie. “The Blythedale Trail Run is one of those events that really shows off how special the KZN North Coast is, it’s beautiful.”

In the men’s division, Jonathan Fish claimed victory in the 19km race with a time of 1:21:08, while Jason Battric secured the 10km win in 56:43. Chris Quinton dominated the 5km short course, finishing in 25:42.

“We want to thank our community for making what we do such a pleasure and our crew for all their hard work. See you on the trails,” said Garvie.

The next KZNTR event takes place on 15 March at Bisley Nature Reserve near Pietermaritzburg.
