North Coast cyclists deliver standout wins at SA championships

Josh Johnson, Tyler Jacobs and Madison Bateson proved the North Coast's cycling strength on the national stage.

Local cyclists dominated the national stage, claiming multiple gold medals at the SA Road, Individual Time Trial and Para Cycling Championships in Gauteng last week.

Josh Johnson, Tyler Jacobs and Madison Bateson, who already have multiple national titles to their names, continued their winning ways at Midvaal.

Twelve-time national cycling champion Josh Johnson (17) claimed double gold after winning the 143km road race and successfully defending his 29.3km time trial title.

“I am incredibly happy and proud. I have worked very hard for this and winning both titles has been a big personal goal,” he said.

Josh said his preparation played a decisive role in his success.

“We knew the heat and distance were going to play a factor, so preparation was important. I was fighting it out with seven of the best riders before a tactical move halfway through the race secured me the win.”

He will now head to Europe later this month for a training camp before competing for Grenke Auto-Eder in races across Spain, Belgium and France.

“I am excited for the upcoming European season, representing my country means a lot to me,” said Johnson.

In the elite women’s division, under-23 2025 mountain bike world championship bronze medallist Tyler Jacobs (21) impressed on her national road racing debut, winning the 143km road race with a well-timed sprint finish.

“It was a lot bumpier than I am used to racing,” she said.

“I do not have much road experience, so I sat in, watched the other riders and waited before making my move, which worked for me.”

Two-time national youth champion Madison Bateson (16) stepped up an age category and claimed the junior women’s crown after a hard-fought 100.6km race.

“Winning the national title as a first-year junior means so much to me,” she said.

Her victory was particularly remarkable given mid-race mechanical problems. Bateson dropped her chain and had to chase for 8km before rejoining the group in the final stretch.

“It was super hard. I had a technical issue out on the course and my gears weren’t shifting. I thought my race was over, but I managed to catch the group again – I am so happy,” she said.
