Teacher, coach, leader, backline joker: Meet Ballito Dolphin’s player Jakez Kritzinger
His proudest rugby moment was earning his first cap for the Kempton Wolves at just 19.
Jakez Kritzinger has built a rugby reputation on versatility, instinct and an unmistakable love for the game.
Rugby has been part of Jakez’s (34) life for as long as he can remember. Growing up in a rugby-mad family, he was inspired early on by the great Joost van der Westhuizen, watching the legendary Springbok play for Northern Transvaal.
“I remember thinking, this is something I see myself doing one day,” the Salt Rock resident recalled.

Jakez earned the nickname “The Joker” for his ability to slot into any backline position with ease and “Goose Step” for his fancy footwork. He describes his journey as one not built on chasing applause, but on discovering a natural gift.
“I didn’t play for the fame or the cheers. When I started playing under the right coaches, I just kept improving. They gave me the confidence that eventually saw me earn a provincial cap for the Valke in 2015.”
His coaching journey has been just as meaningful. Jakez served as Curro Salt Rock’s 1st team coach in 2023 and is currently the Dolphins Colts U15 coach, pouring the same passion into developing young talent as he brings onto the field. Off the pitch, he is a dedicated teacher at Curro, serving as head of prefects and Grade 7. He also coaches rugby, cricket and soccer.
In 2023, he proudly led the iLembe Sharks U12 soccer team to victory in the KZN Invitational Primary School Soccer Association tournament.
His most formidable individual opponent was Springbok Jaco Taute. Yet his proudest rugby moment wasn’t at provincial level, it was earning his first cap for the Kempton Wolves at just 19.
“They were a powerhouse. Being the youngest in the squad and earning that cap was the best feeling ever.”
The Dolphins hold a special place in his heart and he values the team’s camaraderie deeply.
“No matter our backgrounds, we choose to play. We all have something to give to this game.”
After matches, Jakez can often be found unwinding with teammates at Karibu. His advice to young players is simple but profound.
“Celebrate every triumph and every failure, because trophies fade, but memories don’t.”
