Junior North Coast cyclists shine at SA cross country cup
Madison Bateson and Joshua Paul both claimed two medals in Paarl.
The North Coast’s next generation of cycling talent powered to podium positions in the first round of the 2026 SA National XCO/XCC Mountain Biking Championship last weekend.
Ballito’s Madison Bateson (16) and Joshua Paul (17) led the charge, each securing two podium finishes across two disciplines at the competition in Paarl.
The XCC (Cross-Country Short Track) and XCO (Cross-Country Olympic) disciplines vary greatly in race duration, course layout and tactical style, making their dual-podium performances especially impressive.

For Bateson, the event marked a flawless debut in the junior women’s category. She dominated both races, claiming victory with commanding leads over the rest of the field. Already known for her versatility across road and mountain biking, Bateson – a two-time national youth road cycling champion – continues to impress across all formats.
“I’m incredibly happy to have taken the win at the first SA XCC and XCO Cup of the year,” she said.
“Starting the season on such a positive note has given me a real boost in confidence, and I’m excited to build on this momentum as the year progresses.”

Paul produced two determined performances in the junior men’s category, taking silver in the XCC and bronze in the XCO. The latter race unfolded as an intense four-man battle before splitting on the final lap, with Paul digging deep to secure third place.
“I really enjoyed the tight competition, especially against riders who were racing on their local course,” said Joshua. “It was a solid start to his season.”
In her first season racing at elite level, Ballito’s Errin Mackridge (19) delivered two respectable mid-pack finishes – 7th in the XCC and 8th in the XCO – holding her own against older, more seasoned riders.

“It’s a massive jump from the juniors to competing against elite athletes,” said Errin. “It’s challenging but cool.”
Errin’s brother, Cameron (17), placed 20th, while Cody Maidman (16), competing at the event for the first time, finished 24th after battling illness and a crash in the junior men’s XCO.
“I felt strong in the XCO until I crashed and injured myself, but I’m glad I pushed through and finished the race,” said Maidman.
