Ballito United FC calls on new players to join ahead of upcoming season

The club caters for players from U6 to U17 and is particularly focused on growing the girls' division.

Ballito United Football Club (BUFC) is gearing up for its second open day as the community-based club looks to grow its player base, particularly among girls.

Hosted at Curro Salt Rock, the open day kicks off at 5pm on Thursday (March 19).

BUFC, an NPO and Public Benefit Organisation founded in 2018, held its first open session last week, attracting strong interest from local families. The club competes in the Greater Durban Local Football Association League (GDLFAL) and runs teams from U6 to U17.

Chairman Gareth de Lange said the club’s priority this year is to encourage more girls to join.

“We only have one team made up of girls of different ages, and we’d like to grow this part of the club,” he said.

The club has already seen strong preseason attendance, with more than 100 registered members and about 80 players turning out for recent summer training.

De Lange encouraged parents to attend the open day to meet the coaches, learn about the club’s development philosophy and experience the environment.

“We are a community-based club committed to making sport accessible. Not everyone can afford our fees, so we assist where we can.”

BUFC trains from February to December at Curro, while home fixtures between April and October are played at Crawford International North Coast in Westbrook.

Ballito United Football Club will begin the new season in April.

Through external sponsorships, the club subsidises about 20% of its players from underprivileged communities and is seeking additional partners to expand this programme.

Players from surrounding townships are identified by BUFC coaches. If they join, the club provides boots, match kits and transport to and from training.

Training times are Tuesdays and Thursdays: 4.30pm-5.30pm for U6-U9 and 5pm-6.30pm for U10-U17 and girls aged U13-U17.
