Umdloti paddler Hamish Lovemore claims bronze at Canoe Sprint World Cup

The Olympian delivered the best result of the South African contingent.

Umdloti paddler Hamish Lovemore opened his international season with a bronze medal at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Cup in Hungary last weekend.

Competing in Szeged as part of a six-member South African squad, Lovemore produced the team’s best result by claiming bronze in the men’s K1 5 000m event on Sunday.

The 25-year-old added to an already impressive weekend after earlier securing a place in the final of the Olympic-distance K1 1 000m race, where he finished ninth on Saturday.

The event marked a rewarding return to Szeged for Lovemore, who was competing there for the fifth time.

“I am super stoked with my bronze medal,” said Lovemore.

“The level is extremely high and there were only a few seconds between me and some of the best paddlers in the world.”

The Szeged World Cup carries added importance this season as it is the first event contributing towards the new Olympic qualification ranking system for the 2028 Los Angeles Games. Lovemore’s podium finish therefore earned him valuable ranking points as he begins his campaign to return to the Olympic stage.

With momentum on his side, Lovemore now shifts his focus to the next World Cup event in Brandenburg, Germany, from Thursday to Sunday. The competition will provide another opportunity to build ranking points ahead of the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Poland later this year.
