Banyana soccer captain inspires Crawford
Training clinic hosted for aspiring female soccer players.
SA Women’s Soccer team captain, Janine van Wyk, recently held an exciting training clinic at Crawford College North Coast.
A total of 17 high school girls from the greater Durban area took advantage of this opportunity to develop their soccer skills .
Van Wyk told the girls how she had to play in boys teams throughout her school career and only later found a girl’s team in the KwaThema township, which was not easy either due to language and cultural issues.
While playing for club sides Moroka Swallows, Palace Super Falcons and Mamelodi Sundowns, van Wyk was finally selected for the SA women’s team.
She made history with Banyana Banyana, by scoring the only and winning goal against Nigeria and qualifying for the 2002 London Olympics.
Van Wyk has gone on to earn 107 SA caps and start her own soccer club, JvW FC.
Maybe one of the soccer girls training at this clinic will be telling a similar tale of wonder and success in the future.
