Racing to the podium

Ashton pupil scores third place in karting champs.

The second round of the SA National Karting Championships held in Vereeniging provided plenty of action and entertainment in ROK and SARMC categories.

For the Tonykart Stable, the highlight was taking gold, silver and bronze in the very competitive Rotax DD2 Gearbox class – with Justin Allison claiming his first overall win at National level.

Jonathan Aberdein won the first heat of the day, and finished second in heat two, but a five-place penalty in the final heat cost him the overall win to finish second.

The Tonykart duo are now first and second in the 2015 title race.

Benjamin Habig, a form four pupil at Ashton International College, finished 3rd in the class after missing the first national in Cape Town due to a rugby injury – bagging him some valuable points and moving him up to 19th in the championship from 32nd.

Cristiano Morgado, who had finished second in the DD2 Masters category in Heat 1, escaped few bumps and bruises after a high speed head-over-tail roll on the back straight.

The race was red-flagged and restarted. Morgado’s kart was damaged and he was unable to participate in the final heat of the day.

In the Max Challenge, it was KZN’s Robert Whiting who surprised competitors by setting a blistering qualifying time in his Tonykart, and recorded a good finish in all three heats, giving him 4th overall for the day. Jonathan Aberdein was in good form and moved easily from the DD2 race to the Max Challenge class, and with a win and a 2nd place, he finished 2nd overall for the day.

Junior Max drivers entertained with spectacular driving and young Dominic Lincoln, another Ashton Ballito pupil from KZN Kart Club, recorded his best performance to date at National level.

He had a very good run in the first heat, finishing sixth from starting in position nine on the grid.

A steady performance in heats two and three saw Lincoln finishing fifth overall with Tonykart Stable mate Delano Fowler in sixth.

This was the third round of the ROK Championship, and here too Tonykart drivers performed well, delivering excellent results.

The next round of the 2015 SA Rotax Max Challenge will be held at Idube on August 14 and 15.
