For the love of reading

Jessica Nair’s début as an author in ‘I can read’ draws from her many years as a teacher in Shakaskraal Primary School.
The book targets parents and preschool teachers to help them teach children how to read.
“I am sharing the basics that have worked for me in teaching my children and pupils how to read from as young as the age of two years,” said Jessica.
She said most experienced teachers would be familiar with some of the content of the book because that is how they used to teach before the curriculum was changed to outcome based education (OBE) in the 1990s.
“We lost our way when OBE was introduced and that is why today we have a problem of high school children who cannot read,” she said.
The book can be used as a manual and has activities to help familiarise the child with different sounds. Nair is already using I can read at the Breakthrough Centre, a preschool that she runs with her husband Pastor Trevor Nair.
“Knowing how to read inspires curiosity to know more. If your children know how to read, they have more confidence in their school work and perform better academically.”
She told the Courier that parents must be on the look out for workshops in their areas where she will be giving them tips on how to use the book effectively.
Jessica also runs free extra tuition classes at the Breakthrough Centre in Etete every Saturday where she uses her book to teach children how to read and write.
