A development project focusing on empowering female film makers came to the North Coast last week to set the cameras rolling.
Durban film makers Bonnie Sithebe and Jayan Moodley, who were chosen among others to develop their scripts into short films, were ecstatic on set at Ballito’s Crush night club last Thursday.
“This is a dream come true,” said Moodley.
“We normally have to do everything ourselves, so now to have teams of professionals filming… we can focus on directing. It is amazing!”
The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) is putting the project together as part of a celebration of 20 years of democracy.
Sithebe and Moodley co-wrote the script and are co-directing the film, called The Dance, with a dedicated crew including lighting, filming and sound specialists from Johannesburg and Cape Town and producer Karima Effendi.
“The other directors are all shooting in Johannesburg, but we really wanted to keep ours in KZN,” said Sithebe.
The crew arrived at Crush for a club scene, after shooting other scenes in a parking lot in Stanger and in a nearby sugar cane field.
The end result will be one of five thirty minute short films, set to be shown at the Durban International Film Festival and the Cannes film festival in France, as well as being broadcast on SABC. The dates for the broadcast have not yet been confirmed.
