Painting with light

Local artist Jane Digby to host exhibit.

Painting for Ballito artist Jane Digby is an intensely emotional experience.

“My paintings each represent a moment in time. So when I am painting from a photograph I took then how I was feeling and how the light was falling at that moment, influences the finished product,” said Digby. Digby is an established oil painter, who has been honing her craft for the past 16 years. “When I began painting I found the real me,” she said. Influenced by Expressionism, the play of light on her subject is her muse and chief interest. “The subject is the vehicle through which I paint light.”

Digby paints spontaneously: each painting is an intuitive response to the subject – resulting in splashes and dashes of colour, light and and shadows. “I can finish the majority of a painting in a matter of hours. When a painting is going well, it takes me off to another place, I feel such a high. I work in a frenzy – the feeling is awesome. Then I let it rest for a few days or months before going back to make the finishing touches.”

Her paintings vary from breathtaking landscapes, to large portraits, filled with depth and emotion. This energetic artist resides in Simbithi Eco Estate with her husband Stuart and their two teenage daughters, Jemma (16) and Tayla (14).

Digby will be hosting an exhibition of some of her most recent work at the Simbithi Country Club from Friday, October 31 until Sunday, November 2, from 9 am – 4 pm.

For an opportunity to meet the artist, head to the official opening on Thursday, October 30, from 6 pm until 7.30 pm.
