Durban Curry to compete in international competition
Recipe book impressed judges and will compete in awards in China.
The best-selling local food book Durban Curry, So Much of Flavour, will represent South Africa in the Historical Recipes finals of the Gourmand World Cookbook awards in China.
This is the third book by writer Erica Platter and photographer-designer Clinton Friedman which has shone in this international competition.
It was also one of the six finalists in South Africa’s first national cookbook competition and the only book that was not from the Cape!
“The social significance of the book is well-explained and extremely important,” said Gourmand President Edouard Cointreau.
“We have a Culinary Heritage category for this kind of book, transmitting food culture through generations and society.”
Anthropologist, chef, and food writer Anna Trapido, herself a two-times World Gourmand winner, commented that of all the cookbooks she had reviewed during 2014, Durban Curry was “the one most likely to become an enduring culinary classic.”
Platter and Friedman paid tribute to the many local cooks and chefs whose recipes and stories they documented in this book.
“Our pride, and theirs, shines through on every page. They have made our local dish a national culinary treasure,” the authors said.
