Top Bun: Yes or No?

The why and why not of the man-bun hairstyle.

In recent months we have all observed the emergence of a trending new hairstyle for men: the man-bun, top-knot or as it is also known in some circles; ‘my little pony-tail’.

Its recent arrival on the hipster scene has seen scores of boys and men proudly shave a military cut on both sides and round the back while sporting a neat little secretary-esque bun pulled back and tied up on the top of the head.

So where did this herd of wild pony-tails come from and how long are they staying?

The truth is, it is difficult to say.

After consulting a wide range of Ballito’s women, it became clear that for most ladies the bun is knot too hot.

Angeline and Shanice Naidoo from Surfers in the Lifestyle Centre, Ballito, remarked that the hairstyle is “totally unattractive and unappealing”, while Thuli Ngwenya appealed; “I don’t know what it does for a man, but to me it doesn’t make sense”. Even the Scarlet May ladies gave it “a big nay”.

Many people believe only older ladies can rock them, so if you are a young guy looking for love, perhaps you should think twice about strutting the street with your bun bouncing excitedly as you go.

But there are many guys and girls from across the globe who defend the stylistic integrity of the man-bun with all the honour characterised by the haircut’s original Samurai inventors.

On the Courier’s Facebook post about man-buns, Julie Robert commented that “men need options too”, while Tallulah Rowland Smith simply posted that “it’s hot” – ’nuff said. So there you have it chaps, if you do have a bun, don’t feel too tied up.

At the end of the day, whether you want to ‘stop the knot’ and see it rot or save the bun and wear it with sweet pride; it is only a haircut.

If we can accept the Mullet and even the occasional John Dory, then I think we can learn to live with a little bun on top of a few blokes’ bobbing heads.

Derick Watts and The Sunday Blues made a video earlier this year where they cut off some guys’ top knots in Cape Town in an attempt to ‘Stop the Knot.’

Everyone in the video that lost a knot was luckily their friends and everything was planned. Watch the video here:
