Doc captures the emotion of wildlife

Local doctor hosts exhibition to show his passion for wildlife photography.

Some of Ballito’s top medical professionals and friends came together at Simbithi Country Club on Wednesday, October 28 to celebrate Dr Ian Lander’s wildlife photographic exhibition.

The beautiful collection of colour and black and white photos were taken over a period of eight years in seven different reserves across South Africa.

“It takes a lot of time to compile a body of work like this,” said Lander, while looking deeply into the eyes of an elephant in one of

his photos.

An anaesthetist at Netcare Alberlito, Lander admits that wildlife photography is his real passion.

“It is a skill. To get a good photo it is not just about the camerawork, but it is also about understanding the behaviour of the animals.”

He does not have a favourite animal to photograph, but his favourite photo is the one he took of an elephant while while lying in the dirt underneath a vehicle.

“I take photos of anything that moves or even those that don’t move! It takes a lot of patience to take wildlife photos, because you need to convey emotion to the viewer.”
