This week I visited one of Ballito’s long standing favourite restaurants – Mamma G’s at the Junction.
The last time I reviewed them was three years ago when Hugo Palacio was still the owner. Ricky Rocha bought the restaurant in 2012 and it was definitely time to see what new flavour he has brought to the place.
The first thing that jumped out at me was the vast selection on offer. Their menu is quite substantial, which is great as it offers more for the diner. The venue décor has changed since I was last there and in my opinion, for the better.
One thing I have always enjoyed about Mamma G’s is the outside area that makes it perfect for families. The kids have ample place to play and you can sit back enjoy your meal.
For starters I had the prawn mayo which is like a type of avocado Ritz but served on a focaccia bread with chilli mayo. I do think the dressing could have used a touch more heat but it was still the perfect dish for a hot summers day.
I saw they had veal marsala as a special. I know that veal can be a bit contentious but the fine lover of food in me could not say no and I wasn’t disappointed. It was beautifully tender as it should be. They did a sterling job with that dish.
My companion went for the`build a burger’ option. This is always fun but it is easy to get carried away and you could end up paying a lot more then you intended. My partner had a bacon, avo and feta burger that came to R75, which at first I thought was a bit steep, until the burger came and it was piled high with toppings, making it really worth every cent.
My only complaint was that the portions were way too big for me. But this is a personal thing and I know most people will see this as good value for money. I would rather have paid a little less and received a smaller portion and been able to finish the meal.
Our waiter was fine, he did seem a little unsure of himself but had a friendly smile, which made up for it.
